In 2020, amidst the global upheaval caused by COVID-19, I found myself unemployed and searching for a more sustainable approach to my wardrobe. Sustainability had always been a crucial part of my lifestyle, but finding eco-friendly clothing options proved challenging. That's when adaswim was born—a small, handmade sustainable bikini business located on Oahu, Hawai'i.
Starting adaswim during the pandemic was both a necessity and a passion project. For two years, I meticulously sewed each bikini myself, ensuring every piece was crafted with care and aligned with my values. At the time, sustainability wasn't as "trending" as it is today, but I was determined to make a difference in the fashion industry.
When the pandemic restrictions eased, life became a whirlwind. Balancing college, a full-time job, and a rapidly growing business became overwhelming. Realizing I needed help to keep up with the demand, I decided to take a bold step: I traveled to Indonesia for six months to find a workshop that shared my commitment to sustainability and ethical labor practices.
Touring various workshops, I found a team that resonated with my values and fell in love with their dedication and craftsmanship. For a year and a half, they helped produce adaswim bikinis, allowing the brand to thrive. However, my new "big girl" corporate job demanded 50-60 hours a week, leaving me drained and struggling to keep the creative spark alive for my business.
By March of this year, I knew something had to change. I left my corporate job and embraced a work-from-home position that brought immense happiness and balance back into my life. This newfound freedom allowed me to reconnect with my passion for sewing and revitalized my commitment to adaswim.
Today, I am thrilled to be back behind the sewing machine, creating bikinis that not only make women feel confident but also contribute to a more sustainable fashion industry. adaswim is once again a labor of love, driven by my creativity and dedication to offering an eco-friendly alternative to fast fashion.
